Having taught in a variety of educational settings over the past two decades, I became deeply interested when I heard of a high school committed to social equity and sustainability. I am proud to join the faculty at New Roots in order to support and deepen this vision, and my
commitment to these core values which have guided my own educational journey.
In support of social equity, I have taught bilingual education and critically engaged history and humanities courses, advocated in schools and communities for underrepresented students and participated in the growth of two other charter schools. These experiences lead me to seek deeper lessons through my affection for the natural world, and to bring the teachings of nature into my educational process. These inquiries lead me from Critical Pedagogy to Waldorf
Education. For three years at the High Mowing School in New Hampshire, and for another two at the Hawthorne Valley School in New York's Hudson Valley, I taught Humanities, and Spanish, and deepened my relationship to the lens of human development this unique and elegant educational system provides. Key to this learning has been the perspective that our connections to the natural world must be deepened in order to protect our humanity.
As a teacher at New Roots I will explore answers to questions that my students and I raise. I seek to participate in modes of inquiry that will lead all of us to deeper self-knowledge. I look forward to working along with my colleagues to make the educational experience for our students a truly transformative one.
Diego received a BA in Sociology with a concentration in Comparative Cultures from the University of California at Irvine in 1992. After traveling throughout Latin America and teaching in Colombia for a few years, he returned to the US and settled in the San Francisco area where he earned his M.Ed. in Cross Cultural Education from National University. He has a history of strong commitment to Social Equity and Sustainability in the world.
