NEW ROOTS EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS JANUARY-MARCH 2012
*
Support Needed for a Member of the New Roots Community - Paula Barry
A member of our New Roots community, Paula
Barry, has recently been diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. Paula is the
mother of Gabriel Gaydos, a 9th grade student at New Roots. Their
family is in need of financial assistance to help with the costs of
transportation, alternative and conventional treatments, and food, among other
things. Assistance in any of the following areas will go a long way for
their family:
-There is an account at GreenStar (on Seneca and Buffalo) that has been set up
to help the family with groceries. Ask at the Customer Service desk about
donating- any amount will help.
-If you want to contribute time for chores, cleaning, transportation, etc.
Stephanie Haskins, another New Roots parent (Stephaniehaskins414@yahoo.com)
can put folks in touch with the moderator of a Lotsahelping Hands site for the
family.
-Stephanie Haskins is working on a fund raising event, as the family needs to
raise a very large amount of money up front for treatment. She would appreciate
any help with planning a silent auction. Musicians and items are being sought
for this auction. (Stephaniehaskins414@yahoo.com)
* Snow Day Announcements
New
Roots will always be closed if the Ithaca City School District (ICSD) is
closed. New Roots may also
close when the ICSD is open if the majority of the outlying districts are
closed due to bad roads, as over half of our students live in these areas.
School
closings will be announced on the following radio stations:
WSKG 90.9 FM
WICB 91.7 FM
WHCU 780 AM
WVBR 93.5 FM
Closings or delays will also be posted to our website at newrootsschool.org and on our Facebook page, and an email will be sent to families and staff.
On
days when the ICSD is open but outlying districts have delays, we will open our
doors at the usual time and get the day underway with students who are able to
make it on time. We'll expect that students from districts with delays will be
late. Teachers will coordinate to
make sure that all students who missed classes due to snow have an opportunity
to receive assignments and any instruction necessary to support their success.

Roots"
The URL for our
official facebook page is www.facebook.com/NewRootsCharterSchool.

* Opportunity for Hispanic and Latino/a 11th
and 12th graders:
New Roots has been offered the opportunity to
send a delegation of Hispanic juniors and seniors for 4 days of training at
Onondaga Community College, culminating in a weekend in Albany for a mock
legislative session focusing on bills with 200 Hispanic students from around
New York State. The all-expenses-paid weekend includes meeting Hispanic
"movers and shakers", listening to presentations, a pizza party and
dance, as well as the mock session during which each student represents and
sits in the seat of a particular state legislator. It can be a life-changing experience.
See Ms. Sarah for more info on how to apply. Details can be found at this web
site: http://www.ocmboces.org/teacherpage.cfm?teacher=697
* Seeking Scholarships for New Roots Students:
As you know, this is the first year that New Roots will have a graduating

A database of organizations and individuals we plan to reach out to seek
support from has already been created but what we need now is your help!
If you would like to join the Scholarships task force or if you have an
idea of individuals, organizations or businesses we should add to the list of

establish who will be offered admission for next year and who will be placed on
a waitlist. Based on increased awareness of, and interest in, our school, we
may need to hold a lottery for the
first time this year. Please
encourage anyone you know who is interested in learning more about the school
to do so before the April 16 deadline to ensure that they maximize their
chances of being admitted for the 2012-2013 school year!
