NEW ROOTS CHARTER SCHOOL

 *New Roots Monthly Potluck Dates
Thanks to all families who came to our first potluck! Teachers, families and students had a wonderful time connecting over delicious food. We hope to see you all at our future potlucks and hope that you join us in creating a greater sense of community among families at New Roots. The potluck dates for the rest of the year are listed below.
December (no potluck due to the short month and conflicts with the Winter Concert)

*Volunteer for the New Roots Arm Warmer Fundraiser!
The PCSO would like to invite all families to participate in our “arm warmer” fundraiser for our students here at New Roots. We will be “up-cycling”old sweaters and other repurposed materials into arm warmers, which will then be sold at the Winter Concert on December 14. No sewing experience is needed to volunteer! Parent and student volunteers will be meeting on Monday, December 5th from 4pm - 6pm and Wednesday, December 7th from 5pm - 6:30pm at the Clinton House to make the arm warmers.We will provide food/snacks.If you have any questions please contact Preeti Panda (ppanda@newrootsschool.org). 
 
Thursday 12/1 - Saturday 12/31 New Roots Art Show "Art Through the Ages" at GreenStar Cooperative Market's West End Store, 701 West Buffalo Street, Ithaca, NY. This show features a variety of artworks by New Roots student artists in grades 9-12. Materials and drawing tools include buttons, beads, yarn, clay, magazine text and images and re-purposed materials such as fabric samples and computer parts. The show runs during the hours Greenstar is open - every day from 7 am to 11 pm. Closed Christmas day. New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve hours:  7am-9pm. We will hold a reception for the artists and their families in the front end dining area on Friday 12/9 from 3:30-4:30 pm.

* Saturday 12/3 New Roots Jazz Ensemble plays Cornell University Town-Gown Awards and Recognition Ceremony reception, 9:55-10:30 am, followed by event 10:30-12:00 with remarks by Cornell President David Skorton, who will speak on “The Importance of Town-Gown Relations,” James Law Auditorium lobby, College of Veterinary Medicine's Schurman Hall. All are welcome to this celebratory, informal event. There will be free parking in CU's nearby B Lot.
 
*Monday 12/5 – Friday 12/9, Share the Warmth at New Roots
Share the Warmth is a campaign to give warm clothing to those in need during the winter. New Roots will have a collection box for Share the Warmth starting Monday December 5th. Donations of coats, mittens, hats, gloves, scarves, and other warm winter clothing will go a long way in helping those in need. * Tuesday 12/6 Board of Trustees Meeting, 5:30-7:00 pm, Clinton House. Open to the public.
 
* Friday 12/9 Human Rights Day at New Roots.
 
* Wednesday 12/14 New Roots Winter Concert and Holiday Gift Sale, 6-8 pm, State Theater. Come hear the sweet sounds of our Chorus, Chamber Ensemble, and our Jazz Ensembles. Our dance troupe will also perform. The groups will perform pop tunes and holiday-inspired pieces celebrating seasonal festivals of light from many cultures around the world, from solstice to Latin America’s “Dia de las Velitas.” Students from our Spanish Language and Culture and Art classes will contribute a special surprise to the event. ** We will also hold a holiday gift sale at the concert featuring our Farm-to-School Coordinator Allyn Rosenbaum’s famous spaghetti sauce, New Roots clothing, upcycled arm warmers, recycled glass Clinton House suncatchers, New Roots-made jams and other goodies. **

* Friday 12/16 Coffee/Conversation with the Principal, 7:30 - 8:30 am, Clinton House. Parents and guardians are invited to join our Principal for coffee and conversation on the third Friday of each month.

* Monday 12/19/11 - Monday 1/2/12 Winter Recess - No School for Students.

* Tuesday 1/3 Board of Trustees Meeting, 5:30-7:00 pm, Clinton House. Open to the public.
 
* Saturday 1/7 – Tuesday 2/29 New Roots Charter School Student-made Shibori Quilt display at the Tompkins County Public Library. Quilts were made during Fall Intensives Week with Math Teacher Jackie Camidge.

* Monday 1/16 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - No School for Students

* Wednesday 1/18 Spaghetti Dinner to Support our Farm-to-School Program, 5:30-7:30 pm at Women's Community Building.
