Cayuga Lake Environmental Science Symposium at New Roots!

New Roots Charter School will host an Cayuga Lake Environmental Science Symposium on Saturday, February 25th, 2017, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Clinton House.  The public is invited to attend!  


Symposium participants will include leaders from the Cayuga Nation, Ellis Hollow Art and Ecology Collective, Ithaca Area Water Treatment Facility, Cayuga Watershed Network, Plantsmen Nursery, Floating Classroom, Community Science Institute, Earth Arts, Primitive Pursuits, and New Roots students.

School Delay February 13th, 2017

New Roots Charter School will be operating on a two-hour delay today. Students who live in districts that are closed are excused from school. Our lobby will be open this morning to welcome students who arrive earlier due to transportation arrangements! Classes will begin at 11:00AM.

Open House and Renewal Celebration Postponed Due to Winter Storm Warning!

The Open House and Renewal Celebration scheduled for today, Sunday, February 12 from 1-4 p.m. will be rescheduled due to the winter storm warning in effect today.  A new date will be publicized next week.  Enjoy the snow!

Teacher Spotlight: David Streib!

David Streib has been teaching science at New Roots for five years, and serves as our Education for Sustainability Coordinator. His hands-on projects inside and outside the classroom help students gain insight on local environmental issues and build skill with modern tools.


In his Contemporary Science and Technology (CST) class, David facilitates multiple excursionary projects. The  Local Water Quality Testing Project involves  visits to the Ithaca Water Treatment Plant, to study Community Science Institute databases.

Reel Big Fish Visit!

Last Fall, Reel Big Fish visited the music room to teach their songs to students in the New Roots Rock Band.

David Ferreira said of the visit: "Students selected a Reel Big Fish song over the summer to be included in our repertoire for this year. I reached out to the group through a friend of mine that is the current trombonist when I saw they were coming to Ithaca on their US Tour.

School Closed

New Roots Charter School will be closed Tuesday, January 24th due to the continued winter weather advisory, snow, ice and poor driving conditions in our region. Caregivers are advised to keep their students at home. Be safe!  

Midterm and Regents Exam Week at New Roots

January 24-27th is testing week for New Roots Students.  Students may be scheduled for Regents exams and/or a midterm.  The link below is to the testing schedule.  Please pay close attention to when you or your student should be at school this upcoming week!

Unless students have an appointment with a teacher, they should only be at school this week when they have a test scheduled.  Lunch will be provided each day of testing.
